Artist: José Ramón Lerma
Title: Re-Birth (1972)
Medium: Mixed media on paper
Size: 20.5" x 16.5"
Statement: In 1972 I was visiting a friend in Iowa City. His family donated a portion of the family farm, called Indian Lookout, to a conservation organization. It was the place where the elderly, women and children were taken during wartime. All native trees had been cut. My friend planted thousands of native trees—wild oaks, wild cherries, wild walnuts and many original wild flowers.

My images, which I saw from my window, had been struck by lightning. The tree roots started to send out shoots. Its rebirth was the inspiration for my art piece.

Artist: Candace Loheed
Title: Hope Springs
Medium: Digital photo collage
Size: 14" x 11"
Statement: I like to take photos of the urban environment. This is a wall in Berkeley, a floor in Paris, a laundromat chair painting I did in San Francisco and a leaf inspired by Chinese flash cards which I found on the streets of Chinatown along with various leaves I pick up. The leaf is the symbol of the struggle of the urban forest's survival as nature coincides with the unlikely juxtapositions which happen in all cities. I like the tenacious qualities of nature and people as they attempt to live in harmony.

Artist: William Stanisich
Title: A Grove
Medium: Watercolor
Size: 23" x 23"
Statement: I have been painting a long series of watercolors and oils inspired by the landscape of Land's End. (GGNRA) I like to paint intimate scenes, bowers and groves under the canopy. I am fascinated by light finding its way through brush and branches. The forms are craggy and windwhipped, idiosyncratic. I want to convey the presence of wind and a cold light.

Artist: Andie Thrams
Title: This Tree, No.8
Medium: Oil on panel
Size: 8" x 8"
Statement: In Wild Forests
I revere trees for their beauty, grace, and persistent beleaguered guardianship of the planet's well being. I spend extended periods of time walking, drawing and painting in remote wild forests of the west from California to Alaska. I sit on the ground, work in hand bound field journals with ink and paint, and spend time with these other beings who live and thrive, in spite of all that makes it harder and harder to survive as a wild thing. I explore trees as individuals; the mystery of how they disappear into the earth, the sky and each other; the other forest plants and creatures; and the fleeting illumination unique to forests. Mostly I seek to discover what might be revealed by repeatedly visiting particular trees over time.
