Christopher Brown |
| Title: |
Iron and Wood |
| Medium: |
Color soapground, softground and spitbite aquatint etching with roulette, scrape and burnish |
| Size: |
35" x 33" |
| Statement: |
Having worked with abstract subject matter for a number of years, Brown has returned to representation but has not abandoned abstraction altogether. In fact, many elements of abstraction still exist in these works such as the blurred paint and the unexpected compositions. This new body of work—which includes figures, horses, trains, logs and cats—represents a synthesis of representation and abstraction, the observed and the invented.

| Title: |
Tami and Twigs |
| Medium: |
Ink on Canson paper with twigs |
| Size: |
16" x 14" with pedestal for jar of twigs |
| Statement: |
Since late last summer, I have been using found (selectively gleaned!) twigs and sticks to use as my drawing tools for work with live models as I prepare for a show called In the Abstract. I've found these implements and instruments aid me better in my goal of abstracting the female form than just using store-bought utensils. |

| Title: |
Vence No. 3 |
| Medium: |
Gouache on paper |
| Size: |
15" x 15" |
| Statement: |
Since 1992 the subject of my paintings has been predominantly landscape forms and trees with a focus on core compositional elements, an investigation of color relationships, and the interaction between abstraction and representation. My objective is to make paintings where references to the natural world, through a studied simplification of formal components, become images of stillness and harmony. |

A Tree for the Forest |
| Medium: |
Oil on panel |
| Size: |
18" x 24" |
| Statement: |
I'm interested in the notion of "break-up," and especially in the moment where one realizes that things are different than they had been perceived to be. The paintings are about residue and a search for truth in the fog of memory. |

Emile Zola said that a work of art is nature viewed through a temperament. To me, a tree is extraordinary. So, as an artist, I attempt to pay homage. |

| Title: |
La Collectionneuse No.2 |
| Medium: |
Acrylic and oil pastel on paper |
| Size: |
28" x 22" |
| Statement: |
My work arises from the desire to capture the mystery and power of emotions and expressions. I am intrigued by the emotional over the physical, and try to evoke the spiritual rather than the complete image. I search for the common sensitivity between my work and the viewer.
I use opaque and transparent acrylics, oil pastels, varnishes and washes in superimposed layers, allowing them to arrange themselves according to their affinities or resistances, with the intent of letting the colors speak. |
